There are several forms of laser vision correction available
today. The original form of excimer laser treatment is known
as PRK (for "photo-refractive
keratectomy"). In PRK, the laser energy is applied to
the surface of the cornea. The predecessor to PRK was RK
(Radial keratotomy) which was the first surgical vision correction
procedure to be widely used to correct nearsightedness. Contrary
to most people's understanding, does not involve the use of
a laser.
Today, however, the most popular variation of excimer laser
vision correction treatment by far is called LASIK (for "laser
in-situ keratomileusis"). LASIK
is our vision correction procedure of choice. Patients greatly
prefer the LASIK procedure because it brings them rapid vision
recovery. The vision recovery with LASIK is so rapid that
most of our patients return to work the very next day!
A NEW, even higher level of surgical precision in the field
of vision correction has now arrived at Grochmal Eye Center
with the use of the Visx excimer
laser upgrade.
The ophthalmologists at Grochmal
Laser Eye Center in Baltimore, Maryland are one
of the first to use the Visx Star
S3 ActiveTrak laser system and LADARVISION
in Maryland for LASIK vision correction procedures.
During a LASIK procedure,
patients focus on a red light while the surgeon performs the
procedure. ActiveTrak technology uses two infrared cameras
to compensate for a patients slight eye movements that
take place during the procedure caused by breathing. In addition,
if the patients eye moves outside the treatment zone,
the laser automatically shuts off. This allows the surgeon
to reposition the laser to continue effective treatment of
the eye.
